NATIVE LANDS.
In the North Island there is a total area of 284,59,000 acres, of which 7, 465,000 acres are Native Lands. In the North Island are between 580,000 and 600,000 people, of which anywhere between 40,000 and 50,000 are Maoris. The Native Lands Question as we have it, depends upon the fact that these 7,465,000 acres are locked against actual European settlement—are responsible for no rates, contribute little to our national wealth, and might better be in Antarctica than in the North Island as far as they affect the progress and prosperity of the Dominion. It is aggravated and made intolerable by the persistent increase of the European population of the North Island and by the continual conflict now going on between the legitimate interests of both European and Maori, and the extraordinary policy of the Administration.—The Citizen
