WAIKATO NOTES

.. ..__— o--' ■ Own Correspondent. The Hamilton West school committee is joining with the Auckland Education Board in asking the Education Department to cstabli«h a grammar school in Hamilton. This is the first outcome of the protracted controversy as to what will be the best form of educational system to establish here. The Department will not concede the combined high school and technical sebcot. so the local educational authorities have decided to go on the principle that half a loaf is better than no bread, and support this scheme. At the annual meeting of the Hamilton Fire Briagde the Mayor intimated that the Council would probably purchase an additional 1000 feet of hose and a dozen sets of couplings for the brigade, as well as placing £75 *»n the estimates as against £SO last year. He said that the Brigade had recently saved owners of property thousands of pounds. The Brigade was probably the most useful institution in the town. Mr Grcenslade also spoke, promising his assistance in Parliament whenever needed. It is generally felt that the Brigade deserves support and encouragement. The rapid growth of Frankton has necessitated provision of school accommodation in a convenient centre, and accordingly a site ha.* be™ fixed upon about one an a half miles from the station at the junction of the Whatawhata and Koromatua roads. It wilt when finished, accommodate 50 children.
