KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.

An ordinary nwtinjr of the Kawhia County Council was held in the Council Chambers. Kawhia. on Saturday. stb rest. There were present: Crs W. J. Shaw—chairtr.an. A. W. Babbage. J. £> Nocnan, A W. Elliott, R. T. Davie* and Jaa. Kearns. A communication waa received from the Chief Surveyor, informing the Council that the plans, etc., in connection with taking the road to Scott • hmd at Kinofcaku had been forwarded to Wellington for publication. The Chairman expressed bis satisfaction that the Department had now taken stepa in the matter as. now that the position of the road ia determined on. the Council can fix a site for the proposed landing at an carlv date. Later in the meeting a sum of £220 waa set aside out of loan money for this work. In reply to a request that the control of the Aotea Harbour should be vested in the Council, the Marine Department wrote that as the harbour bordered on more than one County it would be necessary that the request shook! be made jointly by the Raglan and Kawhia County Councils. It waa decided to support the Clifton County Council in obtaining an amendment of the Local Bodies Loans Act, to provide for differential rating over special ban districts to order to more equitably distribute the burden of special rates in respect of loans for road works. Mr H. T. CilHes. Council's solicitor, forwarded draft conditions of sale and draft lease for the Harbour Endowments. After some discussion it was decided not to open these lands for selection until the certificate of title is obtained. The Chairman reported that the contracts for the erection of the Awaroa and Oparao landings and sheds had been let for JSIOS and £199 13s 3d respectively. On the motion of Cr Nconan it was decided to request the Government to put two blocks of Crown land at Awaroa on the market. The Engineer submitted plans for the extension of the Kawhia wharf. It was decided to invite tenders returnable on July 10th, for this work. WAIKAKA NOTES. (Own Correspondent). Crunching is in foil swing here at present. Messrs Blank Bros, have just finished their flock, and a number of other settlers are about to start operations. Wooed Bros, have a magnificent crop of rape on their bush born this year, and a fine tot of young grass, and consequently they will be well off for winter feed. Messrs Komber and Fadgen have recently bought a fine flock of breeding ewes, and not withstanding the fact that they were trucked from Hawkes Bay to Ongarue, and had rather a rough time on the road before arriving at th«tr destination they looked none tbc worse for their journey. Great dissatisfaction is felt by a number of.aettters at the dilitary manner in which the roads Department has acted this year in pushing the bridle track through, as a number of them have no outlet from their sections at present other than a pig track. Some of them have had this sort of thing to contend with for six years, and yet ar* told this is God's own Country. Pigeons are very numerous here this season, and are in very good condition. Pheasants are very numerous also. That this part of the King Country ia going to be a great sheep centre in the future goes without saying. Flocks of sheep are starting to come in for different settlers almost daily.

KAWHIA DISTRICT. | (Own Correspondent.) Mr T. J. Scott, of Pirongia West, j Oparau, arrived last week with a nice | mob of stud Lincoln ewes from the , Main Trunk line, the sheep being brought th-ough from Waverly near Wanganui, all of which were picked sheep from the Hock of Mr Bremner, of that place. The Main Trunk line is of great advantage to settlers, who are now able to introduce fr-an strains of stock into the district at a small expense. Settlers are now appreciating the bene Jit derived from the late heavy (ires in this district. They are now able to graae in many places 100 per pent more stock. Many cows should be milked this coping season. A very large area of the Kawhia district has great possibilities for the dairying industry. A successful demonstration of the -apatilities of the Rotary Disc plough was given lately at Oparau by the travelling agent. It should be an ideal implement for breaking in the fern and manuka land in the district. Settlers were enthusiastic over the work and several booked orders on the ground. The trial was performed by the agent himself with the aid of Mr McKenaie'e tine team of horses. It isrumoured a wholesale license to sell liquor is to be applied for at Kawhia, since recent developments at iwakinp and 'elsewhere The Roads and Bridges Department are stilt proceeding apace with tb? Various roads and bridges in the district, mu**» useful *«»fc being **>*• With a vigorous policy in the construction of roads and bridges, and the opening up of Native lands. Kawbia district should support a very large population. It aeema a pity that the Kawhia County Council and Harbour Board cannot improve their status, lawsuits are likely to arise in reference to the erection of sheds for the accommodation of goods.exportaand imports, ete., and the subsidy to the Waikato Hospital Board. What with the late law action ; upsetting of the County election, and the probability of further actions, the above body will be much involved in law suits.

Attention is drawn to the meeting called for Friday evening at U* ♦♦Chronicle" office, for the pwrp©*©! forming a branch of the Auckland Acelimatisation Society. Mr F.P. Moorhouee, convener of the meeting, baa keen to communication with the Auekland Society, and tha project »• well worthy of the support of both town and srt <J«a tothe out «fla-
