DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS

By Tefegraph. '. WELLINGTON, Monday. In reference to the petition from settlers about the difficulty in connection with eel weirs at Kawa swamp, the Minister for Native Affairs informed Mr Jennings that the matter is one in which the Government cannot take any action. The Minister for Lands informs Mr Jennings that a sum of one hundred and seventy-five pounds will be placed on the Estimates for the purpose of felling and grassing the area reserved for the township of Ratanui. The matter of proceeding with the construction of the Stratford-Ongarue railway from the Main Trunk end has been discussed by the Premier and Minister for Public Works with Mr Jennings, and the memberifor the district will be in a position to discuss matters with the deputation of settlers that arrive in Wellington week.

A very large number of matters dealing with roads, bridges, schools, and telephone communication, have been submitted by the member to various Departments during the past week, and satisfactcory replies have been received.
