VOLUNTEER NOTES.
The Te Kuiti troop of the C Squadron, Waikato Mounted Rifles, left last Saturday for Hamilton for the annual "trek" encampment, under Captain Berry. The "trek" will start from Hamilton and proceed to Morrinsville, thence to Cambridge andiTe Awamutu, and back to Hamilton, where the tournament and military ball take place. Given fine weather the regiment will get in a good deal of useful instructive work.
[ The local volunteers are very pleased that Captain Berry has decided to remain as O.C. the C Squadron. It is on the cards that a rifle match between the Te Kuiti troop and civilians will eventuate in the near future. The squadron has some very fair shots and the civilians can muster a good team ; who will give a good account of themselves at the range. The Te Kuiti school cadets have been practicing at the Waiteti range and intend putting in regular practice, so we may expect many good shots before long. Captain Nicholson, who instructs the cadets, has rapidly knocked his squad into good shape, and the youngsters who now have their uniforms, look quite smart and seem to take great interest in their soldier duties Lieut. Turner will be unable to accompany the Squadron on "trek" owiong to official duties preventing him, but it is hoped that he may be able to join his troop later on in the week. The new rifles for the Te Kuiti troop will be issued in camp this week. There is still room for a good many recruits, and with the splendid field to work upon the Te Kuiti troop should be able to muster as smart and capable a lot of men as any in the regiment. There is plenty of room for more active interest and enthusiasm, and many could assist in other ways than by joining the ranks. Honorary members would help the Troop's funds, and would be able to obtain rifle practice at their very doors.
