THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 1909 PIOPIO DAIRY FACTORY.

THE starting of a dairy factory at Piopio marks a decided step in the progress of a fine district, and it is to be . hoped tbe responsibilities undertaken by the progressive settlers will be lightened by hearty «»nd intelligent support of the public in general. The history of the dairying industry in | New Zealand is a long unbroken record j. of success, and those districts which ' offer facilities for the carrying on of | the industry on suitable lines can be | numbered with the most prosperous and I productive in the land. Difficulties to be overcome, and matters of emergency to cope with are only to be expected in a business which is bound to i progress and grow rapidly in volume, but with settlers animated by mutual { interest and a progressive spirit, the | way is male easy for those who have j to shoulder the initial responsibilities. I There is, moreover, not only a definite | objective ahead, but a bright prospect, j judging from results already obtained |in other localities, and while the i originators of the movement are call- \ ed to devote special efforts for the genI eral good, they can rest assured that a [ reward will ultimately be theirs. We I have only to look to the price of land in dairying districts; to the large populations; and to the enormous values of the products of those districts to reailse what dairying means to the farmer and to tbe country at large. Tbe industry has been started at Piopio on proper lines as a eo-operative factory, and we have every confidence in ! the success of the movement. With improved facilities in the shape of good roads there will soon be many branches to the factory and new factories in other districts. Meanwhile to the Piopio factory are extended the best of good wishes together with the j hope that the initial arrangements will be pushed energetically ahead to en- | able the factory to make as early a ! start as possible next season. i '
