DISTRICT PARS.

The Te Kuiti Courthouse was crowded this morning, the attraction being the number of liquor cases set down for hearing. Two of the cases were adjourned until tomorrow, and two others until next Court day, June 17tb. Mr S. Cottell, the newly appointed Home Missionary to Te Kuiti, arrived here last evening from Auckland. He will open a branch of the Wesleyan Methodist Church here. Mr Cottell takes active interest in Football and cricket, especially the latter, be having represented Grafton Club in Auckland last year. He is a representative wicket keeper, and had an average of | 32.6 with the bat. He should be an acquisition to the local talent in this direction. The last issue of the Government Gazette contains notice of the appointment of Mr C. J. Johnson, J.P., of Otorohanga, to be an official member of the Maniapoto Maori Council, vice Mr G. M. Cardnp.

The usual weekly meeting of the Te Kuiti Young Men's Institute was held in the Congregational Church on Monday evening, the subject for the evening being a debate as to which exercised the greater influence for good in the world, the Pulpit or the Press. Mr Cave advocated the claims of the Pulpit and Mr Fenton presented the case for the Press. The respective advocates handled the subject in an able manner and most of those present took part in the discussion. Upon the question being put to the vote, the Press secured the verdict by a majority of two votes.
