THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. MONDAY, MAY 10, 1909 TRAINING THE MAORI.

OF the many questions to be considered in connection with the satisfactory settlement of the Native question, the training of the young Maoris occupies a prominent position in the minds of all who have made a thoughtful estimate of the position. At various times suggestions have been made as to the manner in which the training of the Maori youth of the King Country could be undertaken and it is a matter for surprise that the initiative has not been taken by the progressive Maoris already,. It is gratifying to learn that the subject is to be tackled in a practical manner by the Presbyterian Maori Mission at Taumarunui. Efforts are now being made to acquire a suitable block of land to be used lor training the young men in farming pursuits, and so fit them to advantageously work their own lands. Undoubtedly the scheme is deserving of support and it is to be hoped the example will be widely followed. That such a work is of the greatest importance to the race is obvious to ail, and as the first step towards placing the rank and flip of the race on an equality with their European neighbours, should be eagerly welcomed and supported by the Natives themselves. There is, however, no reason why merely isolated action xhould be taken. There is ample inducement and opportunity for the progressive Maoris throughout the district to combine, and project a comprehensive scheme. There is little doubt if such action were taken the scheme would meet with Governmental support It is to be hoped the prominent members of the race will take the matter up, and help forward the best interests of the race aiid of the country in general.
