KAEAEA.

(Own Correspondent.)

A meeting of settlers was held in the schoolhoose on Saturday night to consider matters of local interest. Mr Elwood was in the chair. Mr A. Thomas explained the object of the meeting, and in doing so pointed out that there was a likelihood of Mr A Julian being removed from bis position as district engineer Mr Bord. of Te Kuitt, taking bis place. This was agreed on all sides to be undesirable, and detrimental to the best interests of the district. Mr Thomas urged in closing that in the interests of fair play, as well as of the settlers, those present should combine to prevent the change being made. Mr Hickman spoke of the manner in which Mr Julian had been treated at the recent visit of the Minister for Roads and Bridges. Others spoke in a similar strain, and it was decided to send a petition to the Department praying that Mr Julian retain bis position. The subject of the recent sty grog cases was introduced by Mr Hickman. and eagerly taken op by all hands. 11 is plain that a grave injustice is being done to settlers and respectable men arc being branded as law breakers, when such is not the case. It was decided that the secretary write to the member for the district Mr Jennings, and ask his aid in adjusting the Act so that a man would have to be proved guilty before he was conv ieted by the t»,w.
