PIOPIO DAIRY FACTORY.

THE settlers of Piopio and surrounding districts are to be congratulated upon the activity displayed by tbem in promoting the dairy factory. By arrangin the necessary details thus early and placing matters thoroughly on a business footing the factory should be open for suppliers at the beginning of next season. A gratifying feature of the project lies in the fact that the settlers are starting their business on a cooperative basis, a method which has been found to be in the best interests of the fanners, and has been followed by successful results in other districts. Difference of opinion there must be in

matters of detail, but with a strong directorate, thoroughly r--.-pr>-:---:.taiivf: of the various siipnlic-r.-. tr.'-r<- :.- iittkdoubt that the busir.'-.-s v.;;: • • v.-rrked in the best interests of ail. A highly important point in connection with any budding industry is the making of provision for reasonable expansion in the business, and it is to be hoped the directorate of the new business will not lose sight of the fact that if dairying is to extend in the district the Piopio factory is destined to grow into a large business. Situated as it will be in tbe midst of a large and constantly growing number of small settlers, the factory should increase its output very considerably each succeeding year. It is, therefore, of importance that a sufficiently large plant should be installed to cope with any reasonably estimated increase, without unduly loading the initiators with expense. The happy medium should not be difficult of attainment, and as the position of the financial market is such an important factor in such ventures there is little fear of the directors being able to go too far in providing for the future. We venture to predict that under favourable conditions the venture will prove a success from tbe first season. Thereafter, it is pleasing to know that the prosecution of a progressive policy lies in the hands of the settlers themselves.
