AUSTRALIAN MUTTON CONDEMNED.
The attention of Mr. 7. A. Coghlan, Agent-General fcr Xev.' South Wales, has been drawn to a consignment of frozen mutton shipped to Liverpool •» by a Sydney firm. This consignment consisted of 1255 sheep, which were sold to a dealer at the Central Markets. Four hundred were dispatched to the provinces and the remainder were -** stored at Smithfield. The owner, upon examining them, called the Chief Inspector's attention to their condition, with the result that the return of the four hundred sent out was obtained. After full inspection 812 of the con? signment were seized as unfit for food, j mainly because they were in a wasted, ! emaciated condition. j The sheep bore the label signed by J the consignor, "We declare this meat, when sold, to be fit for human consumption." It is pointed out that such a label has been regarded as a certificate of official inspection at the time of slaughter.
