Liming Land.
Upon tbe bc*t form in which to apply Imc to the soil, the Lancashire County Council's chemist issues a report of experiments, which states: Quicklime in tbe>bell form, and also in the form of crushed lime, were tested against lime-stone which bad been crushed to a fine state. Quicklime on re-absorbing the carbon dioxide and reverting to the carbonate form increases greatly in bulk, so that one ton weighs when completely converted into carbonate of lime, 1 f tons. One ton of sh"ll lime, therefore, was tested against one ton of crushed lime, and also against If tons of crushed limestone, while a no lime plot was also laid out. These tests were carried out on four different farms, and the results were in favour of crushed lime as compared with shell lime; and also in favour of the If tons of crushed limestone as against the one ton of crushed lime. The difference in price was also in favour of tbe crushed limestone, as the one ton of shell lime costs 14s 2d and the one ton of crushed lime costs 22s 2d, while the 1| ton of crushed limstone only cost 13s Bd. Alike as regards both price and produce, therefore, the balance was in favour of tbe crushed limestone, wbich has the further advantage that it has no irritating effects on the eyes and nose, and drops to the ground more readily than crushed lime from a mechanical sower.
