MANGAPEHI.

f On Saturday last the members of the J Rangaroa, Taumarunui, Tennis Club j paid a visit to Mangapehi to play a tournament with the latter club. Mangapehi. for the first time, suffered defeat at the bands of the Rangaroa players. The day was showery, with a strong wind blowing, which was not conducive to good tennis. The four Rangaroa representees were in good form, meeting with only one reverse during the day, when Messr D. Seymour and A. McCrackcn, of Mangapehi, defeated Messrs Laird and Ed- , lington, of the visitors. The gentlemen's Singlet was won byMr Edlingon. who defeated Mr McCracken by 8 points, after a very close game of 50 up. At the risk of being deemed unsportsmanlike, it must be stated that these two crushing «l*fcats adminstercd by visiting teams were largely owing to want of practice on the part of the members of the local club. Perhaps these two reverses will make the defeated club look to it* laurels and cause the members to put in some solid practice. The following arc the details of the play: Gent's Singles Mr Edling ton, Manunui, 50, A. McCracken, Mangapehi. 42.

Gent's Doubles Messrs McCracken and Seymour. Mangapehi, 50, Messrs Laird and Edltngton, Manunui, 44. Ladies* Doubles Mrs Laird and Miss Nixon. Manunui. 59. Misses Tomlinson and Sebcrcr 19. Combined Doubles. Miss Nixon i and Mr Laird. Manunui. >\ Miss Tomlinson and Mr Rcid 3'JL Ladies' Singles. Mrs i.aird. Manunui 3t>, Miss Scherer. Mangapehi 32. Extras. Miss Nixon and Mrs Laird. Manunui, defeated Messrs Rist and Fisher. Mangapehi. Messrs Laird and Edtington. Manui nui. defeated Messrs Seymour and McCracken. The visitors were during the day entertained to dinner and afternoon tea. and expressed themselves on leaving, as thoroughly pleased with their day's outing. The local sawmills close down this Wednesday evening and the employees will have a week's holiday. Most of the residents will be going away, so that the township will be quite deserted next week. Many of tho«e intending to go to Auckland will journey to Taumarunui tonight and catch the Auckland express at midnight. This will bring them to Auckland on Thursday morning, and so will really give them an extra day in the city. The very praiseworthy scheme of correspondence linking amongst the schools of the British Empire that was inaugurated by Mrs E. M. Plunkett, and carried on by Mrs Haldanc in England, has extended its influence even to the small township of Mangapehi. The upper standard scholars have each been connected with a scholar in <cme part of the British Dominions, and several interesting letters have already passed. The scheme is an excellent one, in that it gives the children a graphic idea of the geography of different parts of the Bri- ; tisb Possessions, an idea that could never be so thoroughly conveyed by the reading of a book. Not only that ! but lasting friendships may be formed by this means, which will only be ended by death itself.
