- ♦ On Tuesday last a fire occurred in one of Mr J. T. Hetet's outbuildings, at Te Kuiti, resulting in the loss of about two tons of hay. Ghee is employed by the Hindus for medicinal purposes, and it has many valuable properties,amongst which are said to be improvement of the mental qualities and the voice. Ghee preserved for a hundred years is often quoted in medicinal reports in India. Green manuring helps sandy land by making it more retentive of moisture and by adding Lumus and plant food. In a race at Johannesburg on March 21, for the 220 yards professional sprinting championship of the world and £220, A. B. Postle, the Queensland runner, defeated B. R. Day, the Irish Champion, the time returned being 235. A man named O'Donuhue had a narrow escape from being killed on Monday morning at Taumarunui. -He was driving a horse and cart loaded with furniture, when some children suddenly appeared on a bank by the road, causing the horse to shy. O'Donuhuhu was thrown from the cart; the wheels passed over his thighs; and a great smashing of furniture was the result. As was expected in connection with the election of a member for the Northern Maori Electorate, in place of the late Hons Heke, Doctor Buck was returned by a very large majority. An accident occurred at Te Kuiti on Wednesday whereby a half caste, named Ruru Bell, received somewhat severe injuries. It appears Bell was driving a waggon, loaded with stores, along the road towards his own place, and when opposite Mr Edgar's residence, was thrown to the ground, the wheels of the vehicle pasing over him. As far as could be ascertained yesterday evening no bones are broken, but Bell was very severely brusied, and wa3 suffering from shock. The following tenders have been received by Mr J. Jones, architect of Te Kuiti, for the erection of a residence for E. H. Hardy, Esq.C. W. Coldham, £783; F. King and Son £6S9; W. Fullerton £656; G. Hitchcock £643; Markwick and o'Regan£6l6; Pearson and Bathcelor £537. The Rev. Archdeacon Cole will visit Te Kuiti on Tuesday, March 30th. A meeting will be held in the Church at 8 p.m., at which all those interested in the work of the Church of England are cordially invited to attend, both ladies and gentlemen. The object of the Archdeacon's visit is to consider the division of the King Country into«two districts. A meeting will be held at Otorohanga on Wednesday, March 31st, for the same object. Te Kuiti residents are reminded that two important public meetings are called tomorrow, Friday, evening in Mr F, Hattaway's Sample Rooms, The important «tep of forming a Volunteer Fire Brigade will be discussed at the first meeting, after which the Railway League will discuss important business. Attention is drawn to the meeting of settlers interested in .the starting of a Dairy Factory at Pio Pio. The meeting is called for March 27th at lp.m.. Advertisement appears in another column.
