A Persian Atrocity The "Novoe Vremya" reports that a thousand Persian horsemen, accompanied by five hundred tribesmen on foot, marched along the bank of the river Araxes, which divides Persia from the Russian province of Transcaucasia, towards Julfa, a town on that river, robbing and murdering as they went. They pillaged and burned ten villages, massacring the inhabitants. Many terrified women sought to escape by swimming, with their children on their backs, across the river to Russian territory, but the pillagers, standing on the banks, shot them as they swam.
