The Pig.
The two important factors for the brood sow are proper food and plenty of exercise. Some breeds of pigs will produce more pork than others on the same food, and even with a selected breed there will be individual animals that will increase more rapidly than others. Tests at the Indiana Experiment Station indicate that pigs make better gains when the grain is fed dry than they do when it is mixed with water. This would suggest that those who take the trouble to mix grain with water before feeding waste their time, and to a slight degree the food value of the grain. Mature pigs that are thin may be made to gain half a pound a day on lucerne without grain. The best pigs are found only among the best breeds, and it is useless to look for them elsewhere. Don't fail to provide good shaJe for the pigs during the hot weather. No animal suffers from the heat worse than the pig, and, owing to his inability to perspire, he craves for a pool of cool water to reduce his temperature.
