LICENSING ELECTIONS.
In consequence of reduction having been carried in Auckland at the last local option poll, the interest taken in the election of members of the Licensing Bench this year was unprecedented. The members Of the old committee pledged themselves to reduce the number of licensed houses to the maximum allowed by law, and it was confidently anticipated by no-license advocates that the old committee would again be returned. As the election drew near however, a new element appeared in the civic life of Auckland, and a Citizen's League was formed for the purpose of running an independent ticket at the election. Naturally the influence of the trade was directed to support the Citizens League ticket and feeing ran hgh as the momentous day arrived. The election on Tuesday was keenly fought, and resulted in the return of the Citizens League ticket, the following gentlemen Jawing elected:— Messrs Bagnell, Holland, Mennie, Somers, and Dr. King.
