Colonial Finance The rum of £600.000 has been subscribed towards the New South Wales 34 per cent, loan of £1.580,000, including a large lender by a Sydney bank. Subscriptions amounting to half a million were withdrawn owing to the unsettled state of the market, due to unfavourable news from the Near East. Many tenders were withdrawn altogether, and others were reduced by one half. The position of all Colonial slocks has been affected by Argentine issue of five per cent, at 98. S.'uili.is Championship Ernest Barry, sculling champion of England, who has challenged R. Amsl, of New Zealand, to row for the world's championship on the Thames this year, states that it is impossible to allow the champion £2OO for expenses, but offers to allow him £l2O. He is willing to row in August, but suggests that July would be preferable, owing to the numerous counter-attractions in August.
Canadian Immigration The rww Immigration Bill, introduced by the Canadian Government, contains stringent regulations against the admission into the Dominion of undesirable characters generally and of anarchists.
tiigantic Porgcrles Detectives have arrested four ringleaders of a well-known international gang of forgers, operating chiefly in London and New York. Forged notes and cheques to the value of many thousands of pounds were found on the m»n when they were arrested.
A Double Tragcdy Yisittirs to the National Gallery. on Thursday, were startled by the sudden sound of a revolver shot, and were horrified to see a woman falling to the floor, fatally shot by a man who stood beside her with a pmoking revolver. Before anyone could intervene he turned the weapon upon himself and committed suicide beside the body of his victim. The couple were identified as Mr and Mrs Americans of independent means, residing at Brighton. Dawson left a letter stating that he was the victim of blackmailers.
The Suffragettes
An attempt to raid the Hou.se of liimmoitjt in order to present petition* to Mr A¥«|Uilh. the Prime Minister, led to the arrest of 27 suffragettes, including Lady Constance Lylton, Mrs Dugdale. sister of Mr W. 11. Paul. M.i*.. and Mi*s Solomon, daughter of the former Premier of Ca|>e Colony. The latter made an ineffectual attempt to rush the Brookes Club, where Mr Asmiith was dining.
Libel Suit
A writ for £IO,OOO damage:; for alteged libel has been issued against Lord Rosebery by Drysdale, a former factor of the Dalmeny estate, in Linlithgow, the Scottish scat of the Earldom.
Railway Disaster A message from Quito states that a train was derailed at Kiobamba, in Ecuador, and hurkd a hundred feet over a cliff. Twenty-five persons were killed, and 50 injured.
