The newly-formed -oca: cricket team underwent its "baptism of fire" on Sunday last, in a match with Manunui, played at the Manunui Cricket Ground. The team journeyed to Taumarunui by rail on Saturday night, and was met at the station by the secretary of the Manunui Cricket Club. Mr J. W. L. White. Thence the team proceeded to Manunui by coach, -.-'here the members were put up at Mr W. Har'.sr.d's board-ing-house. Many of the Managpehites attended a very pleasant cance held in the Manunui null that evening, and enjoyed themselves immense!;.". On the morrow the match was played, the day being- a pern-cot one for cricket, with a slight breeuo blowing along the pitch. Though, the result was a win for Manunui. the members of the "losing team were .veil pleased with the match, on. that they gained experience, and that they received the most sportsmanlike treatment. Fe~ Manunui, Messrs P. Kicks and S, Sarah proved great thorns in the =irl: :f the Mangapehi team, Mr Hicks urtirg up 50 runs before he was diuw—u of. Mr Sarah as wickctkecper. -? a miracle of quickness, and hat many of the Mangapehi men's hails v'-g, almost before they could realise that the ball had passed them. For the losers, the best score was eomrwed by Mr A. McCracken. the captain, who played careful cricket. The visitors returned to Taumarunui en Sunday evening, and to Mangapehi ':;.- goods train on Monday morning. It is most probable that the local team will now endeavour to arrange a match with Te Kuiti shortly. Manunui also :r,te~i to pay a return visit w Mangapehi before long.
