AWAKINO DISTRICT.
An Inoperative County. At the la.nt mating ni the Kawhia County Council the Chairman moved- ~ "That the clerk write to the Minister for Internal Affairs urging that the Counties Act be brought into operation in the Awak ino County, and that the Councils of the Waitomo County and Clifton County be asked to co-operate in the matter." Cr Babbagc seconded the motion. The mover said that at present there were a number of people in the Awakino County who wanted it to become operative. Every settler there had to either go through the Kawhia or Waitomo Counties before he could get to the railway or the harbour. He had added the Waitomo County to the motion because it was not fair for either counties to raise loans and make roads and the ratepayers in an inoperative county make use of them and not pay anything. At the time of the county election be had promised to move in this matter if he was elected. The people outside the county took a keen interest in the doings of the county, which they discussed freely. Cr Noonan: I heard more about County matters at Te Kuiti the other day than ever I heard before. If there is much more talent like that in the A wakino County it certainly should be operative to give that talent a chance, otherwise it will be lost to the Dominion. (Laughter.) The Chairman said that some in the Awakino County boasted of the fact that they used roads that they did not pay for. The motion was agreed to.
