Roaming Stock in the Township.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — "Inconsistency thy name is Woman," wrote a French philosopher of old. But had he lived in this World-
leading land of ours today, assuredly he had said : • Inconsistency, thy name is so-called law in Maoriland!" I am led to these reflections upon seeing a bull and cow on a street of our township, this forenoon, enact that which is most proper and conducive to heredity; but which the "Jecency of our age demands shall be performed where our wives and children may not witness it. When I appealed to the law to remove it, this conservator of public ethics and morality, laughed, as who should say: "Well done, Oh hyperergic modesty; but I cannot intervene! Were it a pocket pistol chargedlwith whisky now; or, some microspopic fracture of Saint Prohibition lunacy; or, further, the exposal of some undraped worldfamed work of art; why, then, lead on McDufF to lay the miscreants by the heels! But this paltry thing? Good friend, go, bag thy head!" Has not the time arrived, good friends all, that some measures be enacted by which such unseemly exhibitions be made impossible? And is it not within the province of the police, upon their own authority, to remove and discover the owner of these beasts who roam cur streets, front and back, where women and children pass or congregate? And, further, is there no common law to punish the callous barbarians who permit their entire stock to wander at large, contrary to our Mrs Grundy hypocrisies? Again, good friends all, this urgently awaits your prompt decision.—l am, etc., W. 8., Te Kuiti.
