It was stated at the last meeting of the Waitomo County Council that the rateable value of property within the County was £401,205. With a general rate of }d in the £, the amount of rates collectable figure? out at £1263. The Clerk stated that less than a third of this amount had been paid and it was decided that nil arrears should be sued for after anuary 31st.

During the past week or so, extensive alterations have been going on at Mr Kerr's Temperance Hotel, Te Kuiti. Extra conveniences have been effected on the upper storey, while a new and complete hot water supply is now in working order throughout the house. A septic tank has been built in the yard, and the drainage and sanitary arrangements round the premises are most up-to-date. These improvements make this old and well-known house one of the most commodious and best appointed in the King Country.

The famous Elton Comedy Company appear in the Town Hall, Te Kuiti, on Thursday and Friday, January 20th and 21st, and intend placing before the audience an entirely new programme. This popular company is well-known as first class entertainers, and should receive bumper houses on the occasion of their visit.

The Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., hold their next Te Kuiti Sheep and Cattle Sale on Wednesday, January 27th, and so far have received excellent entries. Up to the present 2610 sheep and 556 cattle have been entered, and further entries are still expect;d. With fine weather this should prove a record Bale.

Messrs Dalgcty and Co., LV\. t Auckland, have received the following cable from their kondon'office, under date 7th inst.: -Butter: The market is steady. The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for the week ending Saturday last were 77,000 cwts. as compared with 61,000 cwt<. for the corresponding period last year. The Copenhagen Official quotation is 3 kroner* (3s 4Jd) higher. We quote Danish Butter at 116s cwt. Finest Australain Baited at 110s cwt.

At the last meeting of the Waitomo County Council a letter was read from the Secretary of the Treasury, intimating that the £2OOO loan for Te Kuiti township would be placed to the credit of the Council in a few days. The Ohauno Races take place on Wednesday next, and good entries have been received for this popular meeting. The late train from Frankton that day will not leave Ohaupo till 5.30 p.m. This will give the King Country visitors an opportunity to see all the races.

Mails for Commonwealth of Australia, Ceylon, India, China, Japan, Straits Settlements, also South Africa, Continent of Europe and United Kingpom, per Mokoia, will close at Auckland on January 18th, at 4.15' p.m.
