The Waikato Trotting Club's meeting which is to be held at Claudelands, Hamilton, on Saturday next, promises to be a highly successful gathering. Excellent entries have been received for the various events and the crack performers of the Northern trotting centre will be on hand to compete. There is bound to be a large number of visitors from Auckland, and the King Country will also be represented. A scene of wild excitement occurred when a trolley, laden with provisions, was being taken to the Broken Hill Proprietary mine under a strong police escort. The crowd hooted and stones were thrown at the mounted police, who, as soon as the trolley was taken to the mine, turned and menaced the crowd, most of whom took to their heels and ran. Meanwhile the foot police, reinforced by the mounted, arrested several of ths most violent of the crowd, who were taken to the lock-up with the utmost difficulty. Later in the afternoon Tom Mann, with 14 others, among whom were some officials of the union, were arrested. Mann, with a socialist flag and a large crowd, headed by a band, marched to the Proprietary property, and a serious not followed, but the police were masters of the situation. Altogether 30 were arrested, a couple of the police being silghtly injured.
