The Rabbit Pest.
Sir,- in a recent issue of your paper I notice that the Department of Agriculture in their annual report, would lead us to believe that the rabbit pest is considrably reduced on ail Native, and Crown lands in the King Country. What rot! It is a wellknown fact that rabbits are increasing on the above-mentioned lands, for the simple reason that Rabbit Inpcctors will persist in following the antiquated idea that poisoning keeps rabbits in cheque, when any experienced rabhiter fcnows that the only method of dealing with the rabbit pest effectually is trapping. The idea of laying poison in the King Country, where rabbits are never short of feed, is simply ridiculous zrA has only one result, via: destroying all imported game such as pheasants, etc. Again. \v are informed that rabbits are increasing on settled land--, in the King Country. Now such a statement may b*- taken for what it is worth, for it has been proved repeatedly throughout th" colony that rabbits never gain any headway in a district that is closely settled. Before concluding. I wish to state that if ever any of those official Rabbit Inpecto»s annoy mc with reference to laying poison on my property, I won't (ail to treat them as my Highland ancestors treated all mcddlseome Lowland loons. I am. etc., FRANCIS COLIN STUART. Settler, Waikaka.
