TE KUITI TOWNSHIP.
- - - Projected Town Council
The knowledge that the President of the Maori Land Board was taking steps to compile a roll for the purpose of setting up a Native Town Council at Te Kuiti, has led to the calling of a public meeting for to-night, when the subject will be discussed by the residents. Mr J. W. Browne, President of the Land Board, when interviewed by a "Chronicle" representative on the subject, stated that he had instructions to take the necessary steps to have a Town Council established, but if the people wished to make representations on the matter, he would be glad to receive them and forward the same to the Native Minister. Mr Browne said the responsibility of taking the initial steps rested with the Maori Land Board. After the first steps had been taken, and the Council got going, the Maori Land Board was relieved of further responsibility. In reply to a question as to what the position would be providing the people refused to nominate candidates for the Town Council. Mr Browne said that evidently no provision had been made for such a happening. It is to be hoped to-night's meeting will be largely attended. The hour has been fixed at 7.30 o'clock.
