PIOPIO SCHOOL PROJECT.
A gratifying feature in connection with the Piopio district is the maimer in which Europeans and Maoris are cooperating for the purpose of having 1 a school established in the district. From the initiation of the project the Natives have taken a keen interest in the subject, and the gift of a suitable site for a building was solid proof of their desire to assist to the utmost. The recommendation by Inspector Crowe, who recently visited the district, to the effect that an aided school would meet the present necessities, providing a building was available for the purpose, has again found the Maoris equal to the occasion and they have offered the use of the Miroahuiao Hall free of charge for twelve months. Such action is commendable in the extreme, and those settlers who will benefit thereby doubtless appreciate such an evidence of public spirit on the pari, of their Native neighbours. The set- J tiers are also to be commended for their efforts, for which they will beamply recompensed by the knowledge that their children are receiving the benefits of an education, without which they would be seriously handicapped in future.
