CHEAP CABLES.
The cheap cable movement is bping widely supported, and Sir Joseph W»PQ has outlined a scheme for the estab* lishment of State owned cables throughout the Empire, which is being; favourably criticised. It is evidentW realised that the distant corne-8 of the Empire, such as New Zealand, much to gain by the establishment o^H
the .Cheapest possible means of communication with the old world and the sister States. Commercially, the advantages are obvious, while the social relations throuhgout the whole of the Empire would be strengthened and quickened in every respect. In addition, the situation in the event of war would be an immense advantage to the outlying dependencies. The proposal for State-owned lines is being favourably received in Australia, and the Federal Agent at the Pacific Cable conference in London has been instructed that the Commonwealth Government, as one of the partners in thp Pacific Cable, favours co-operating in any effort to secure the laying of a State-owned Atlantic cable, and acquiring a State-owned land line across Canada, connecting with the Pacific Cable. The Commonwealth will also support any cheapening of cable rates wherever practicable, on commercial' - lines.
