THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. THURSDAY, DEC. 3, 1908. COUNTY OFFICE SITE.
The action of the Waitomo County Council in setting up a committee to go into the qusetion of acquiring a site for a County Office, and depot for County material, is one which should leatf'to material good, providing the onject is"pursued' with Vigour. So much depends.upon the establishment of the -County : Office" oh a satisfactory and permanent basis that it is devoutly to be hoped the committee appointed will Come.to an early decision upon the points to be considered. In the first place, the question of price is important and obviously the sooner a site is acquired, wherever it may be, the less will then' cost be to the ratepayers. Ther« are other l-easons to be advanced in favour of the proposal, but all fade into insignificance before the fundamental principle of having a business place in. which to carry on the business of the public. .There are. dozens, of other County Councils throughout the Dominion,-and it. wculcf:besafe to assume there is not another instance of a Council not :possessed of an office of its own. While admitting that'in tb,e _pasfc the Council was justified in adopting a workable expedient on the score of economy, there should be no hesitation in abolishing the expedient directly it is found possible to adopt the constitutional course, which is plainly indicated by well established precedent. The work of enquiring and reporting on the matter has been left in capable hands, and the Council is to be congratulated in making a decided move in the direction of sound progress. ..'.'
