CORRESPONDENCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I should like to draw attention to the rather scant courtesy shown to the settlers generally by the Mairoa School Committee, at the election for County Councillors on Wednesday lest. The poll was advertised to take place at the school house, but at a meeting of the committee on Saturday evening, 7th November, it was decided not to grant the use of the school. Great interest was taken in the election, shown by the fact that of all those eligible to vote, and in the district on the day, only four failed to vote, and owing to the stand taken by the committee, the polling booth had to be an open shed in the back yard. I may say that nearly all the settlers in the vicinity turned to and cleared this site by their own work to allow the school to be built, and yet the first time that the use of the building was asked , T 'or during school hours, it was refused. It may be said that it was closely following another holiday, or that it was breaking into school work, but County eiectons ilke General elections only come once in three years, and I hardly think it is too much to ask for the use of the only public building in the district for election purposes. It has been said that permission was not asked, but I understand a letter was sent to the Chairman, requesting the use of the school room on the previous Friday. Altogether it appears that the committee have little consideration for the general public.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. TO THE EDITOR. Sir. —I wish to ask the secretary of the Aria sports if he will let the public or the committee know how the balance sheet of the last meeting stands. It is now about eight months since we held the sports, and as another meeting should be arranged for very shortly, I think it is time we had full information about the last one.—l am, etc., ARIA SETTLER. November 15th 1908.
