The Lucerne Flea.
A destructive little pest known as the "lucerne flea" is working havoc in some parts of South Australia. The flea is rapacious, and seems to increase at a speed which puts the rabbit out of the race altogether; so that a lucerne paddock is soon absolutely at the mercy of the insects. There are paddocks this year which are as bare as a billiard table, the plants having been eaten down to such an extent that their recovery is doubtful. It is stated that the only proved remedy is gas-lime, applied to the paddocks affected, but it is no use treating one block of land and leaving the adjoining blocks alone.
