NATIVE LAND BILL.
The Maori Land Laws Amendment Bill, which has just been passed, besides providing machinery for the better working of several Acts which have been placed on the Statute Book during recent years, contains several clauses affecting Native townships. The chief features in this respect are the providing for the issuing of separate leases, instead of purchasers taking sub-leases of portion of land held under an original lease, and where the township is governed by a local body under the Native Townships Local Government Act, 1905, provision is made for the extinction of the Nativ i Township Council in favour of a borough or town district. In addition to anything contained in the Native Bill, a new clause was inserted, at the instance of Mr Jennings, in the Lccai Bodies Loans Bill, defining the borrowing powers of townships. It is worthy of note that the nuw clauses were inserted after the visit of the Townships Deputation to Wellington, and the way is now open for townships to adopt local gorvernment under very similar conditions to those under which obtain in other European centres:
