A GREAT MAGAZINE.

—o There can be no doubt that "Life" has justified the flourish of trumpets indulged in by the proprietors when an increase in size and an all-round improvement were announced, a month or two back. The addition of a fictionsection was a great boon to readers who '.rant a fair dash of lightness in their reading', and the stories being served up monthly are excellent. For example, in the September issue just cut, there is a fine detective story by Jacques Fu Ire lie (one of the Van Dusen series) ; a capitally written Australian bush-story. In more serious vein is Dr Fitchett's story of the Black War in Tasmania, in which he tells, with graphic effect, the tragedy of a perished race. Among the special illustrated articles three or four stand out prominently . They are :"How I Make ''Em Smile." in which Mr. Barclay Gammon, who is touring Australasia, tells the secrets of succesful funmaking; "Deep-Sea Diving," by W. A. Somerset; "When the Crowd Goes florae," which is another of Charles Nuttall's charming little impressions of New York. The regular departments, covering literature, science, sport, poetry, business, humour, and politics, are filled with bright, useful, up-to-date matter. It is interesting to note that the close of a picture-puzsle competition is announced.
