OHURA VALLEY.
; | (Own Correspondent.) : ; A meeting of the Settlers' Association was held at Mangaroa on trie 2otii September, in response to an inv*tat:on to meet del estates from Ar;a, to I ccn:--ider r:i : >vvay matter:- as far as ike i two disci let-? are mutually interested. ' j October 3rd was fixed as a suitable i date; the meeting to bo held in the j Mangaroa Hall. A long discussion " | ensued ever the slips on the South 1 Ohura road not being removed; south- ; em members pointing out that the cooperative factory was to open for re- ; ceiving cream on the sth of October. 1 They were prevented from supplying as the Huahati saddle was impassable, 1 meaning a loss of about 150 cows to \ the factory, besides the individual loss. As there appeared to be no authenetic information as to who was in charge of the main road, it was decided to send an urgent wire to the District Enginer, ',- to have the work done. It was also decided to urge on the matter of pro- - curing a site in a convenient situation for the erection of sale-yards. The Ohura Athletic Club held their annual meeting of members for the presentation of balance sheet and general business. Mr G. S. Stevenson was in the chair. The balance sheet showed that, commencing with a liability of £9, they had been able as the result of the year's work to make their accounts balance. A special vote of thinks was accorded to the Secretary, Mr S. E. Meredith, for the satisfactory manner he had conducted the season's sports. Officers were appointed for the ensuing year and a list of events to be decided on December the 16th, at Toi Toi, drawn up and agreed upon to wind up with a dance in the evening. An agitation for the opening of a road from Mangapapa to Ongarue has at last proved successful. Mr Julian, District Engineer, a few weeks ago went over the route and in a memo, to the Northern Ohura Settlers Association expressed himself as satisfied that a road could be made along the proposed route as it presented no difficulties unusual to the Ohura district," and would have the engineering survey undertaken at once. Since then Mr A. Sayers has been busy grading the proposed road and has two miles finished. A road along this route would enable the Mangapapa settlers to reach Ongarue in 13 miles, while by the present road they have a jaunt of 24 miles. It would also shorten the road to Mangaroa some five miles,or more, and as I understand that the new route is a very easy grade it is well worth the closer attention of the settlers. A case of scarlet fever has occurred at Mahorahora, one of Mr Print's children being the sufferer. Large entries are being received for the Farmers' Auctioneering Company's spring sale on October 24th, at Matiere and are in excess of any previous sale. Mr Monk, manager of the Ohura Dairy Factory, expects to have everything in readiness to start on Octcober Ist, and has the prospect of a very sucessful season. The Ohura Co-opera-tive Dairy, Niho Niho, expects to start on October sth. They have been delayed owing to the Ohura road being blocked by a slip on the Huahati saddle which has cut off the South Ohura suppliers.
