THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1908. DISTRICT PARS.
Dr Going, of Hamilton, visited Te Kuiti on Tuesday in order to assist Dr Zobel in an operation for appendicitis on the daughter of Mr Berkaham. The operation*was successful and at latest advices the patient was progressing favorably. At the last annual meeting of the Te Rau-a-mea dairy factory, Messrs Qudd, Shaw, Douglas, Easy and Parkinson -were elected directors for the ensuing year. The annual report was couched in hopeful terms and predicted good business for (he ensuing season. Owing to the disastrous bush iires last summer, the factory supply was seriously curtailed and a less of ,■!■;>7 was made for the season. An offer to advance the present season's output, has already been received from the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. On Saturday next, t'epiomber :-.''tli. a close holiday will be observed in all Government ofiiees throughout New Zealand, in celebration of Dominion Pas. The posl offices will be open between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The telegraph office will be closed all day. Te Haiti's first stock sale of the. season will be held on October 7ht by the Farmers' Auctioneering Company, when it; is expected over two thousand head of cattle will be yarded. The first Ohura sale is to be held by the same Company at Matiere on October 20th.
The financial results of the tour of the Anslo-Welsh football team in New Zealand and Ar.f-tvo.lia have proved to Vie a ; -U;v:e;-. ; . The total receipts are ,21 i, ■''.'.!''.'' fro.T- matches played in New Zealand, and .ii,200 received as the New Zealand Union's share from the matches played in Australia, the total expenses being £11,600. The totsl profit of the tour is aboutSlOGO, which will cie distributed amongst the various Unions which are affiliated to the central body.
Among the questions on the order paper of- the House for Wednesday was a question from Mr Greenslad'e, member for Waikato, asking whether the Minister for Railways would endeavour to make arrangements for running a later train between Ohaupo and Te Kuiti on Tuesday evenings, the day on v/hich the weekly stock sales are held at Ohaupo, this being now rendered necessary because of the great increase of settlement between Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti and surrounding districts. At the Te Awamutu Town Board election on Wednesday, September 16th, the following, gentlemen were returned: Messrs Wallace, Teasdale, Bockett, Laurie, and Kirkham.
As the population of Te Kuiti grows the necessity Tor an extepded road system becomes apparent. At the last meeting of the County Council the taking of a road through the pi*operties of Messrs Jordan and Boddie, to connect with the Mangaorino road, was favourably entertained and a petition is now being circulated to have a road taken along the boundary between the Crown land and Native land on the Eastern side of the river, behind the properties of Dr. Zobel and Mr Beck.
In consequence of the great increase of work at the Te Kuiti post office it has been found necessary to appoint another cadet to the office. The addition to the staff is timely as the volume of business transacted for some time past has made heavy demands on the present staff, which is further handicapped by the inadiquate accommodation of the present temporary building. The completion of the new po3t office is being looked forward to by both public and officials as a thing to be desired.
