THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1908. TE KUITI LOAN.
THE news that the application for the Te Kuiti loan has received the provisional approach of the authorities will be received with very general satisfaction, and as a result Te Kuiti residents may look forward to seeing their town very matierally improved within the next few months. The long delay in obtaining a reply from the Treasury officials had led the majority to conclude that the Government had considered the security insufficient to advance money on, notwithstanding that such money was to be devoted wholly to improving the value of the said security. However, after full investigation of the conditions by the Treasury, it has evidently been found that the application is quite in accordance with statutory proeeedure, and the necessary approval has been intimated. Mr J. Ormsby, councillor for the riding has consistently maintained that the application was fully provided for under the Act governing loans to local bodies, and the result undoubtedly establishes the soundness of his contentions. A precedent has been established, and Te Kuiti can claim the distinction of being the first Native township to receive the benefits of a loan under the '' Loans to Local Bodies Act." As to whether the residents are unduly proud of the distinction is quite another matter, and the fact in no way makes less desirable the object for which the township delegates were appointed to proceed to Wellington, though it undoubtedly eases the position with regard to immediate township improvements.
