Winter Spraying.

Most, orchardisls who realise the importance of winter spraying, will make a point of finishing their pruning operations this month in order to get time to apply the early dose of either lime and sulphur, or Bordeaux mixture. Mr. Vv. T Alien, the New South Wales Government Fruit Expert, says that at the Wagga experimental farm orchard they have used the following winter spray with excellent results: —Take 121bs. <\\ sulphur ad 61bs. properly slaked lime, and boil in 100 gallons of water for three or four hours. At the Illinois (U.S.A.) Experimental. Station the following spray has been found cheapest and best:-—lslbs. best lie and an equal weight of sulphur to 50 gallons of water. The sulphur after being mixed with enough water to form a thick paste, was put into 12 gallons of water nearly at the boilig point. The lime was then added, and the mixture was boiled for 40 minutes with the necessary stirring. The whole was strained into a 50 gallon tank, which was then filled with water. This latter says Mr Allen, is claimed to be the most effective out of eleven sprays tested in the destruction of San Jose scale. It is important that the operator should bear in mind that solutions made by stirring the sulphur into the hot water first, and adding the lime to this mixture, are more efficient than if the order of procedure is reversed.
