IS AUSTRALIA DROUGTSTRICKEN?
In the July issue of Australia's leading sixpenny magazine, "Lite,'J a writer explodes the idea that a great part of the back country of Queensland is a droughty waste. In support of his theory he takes the Jordan River and with pen and camera gives a remarkably interesting geography lesson to Australians on Australia. Charles Barrett, the well known Nature writer takes another part of Queensland, and in a finely illustrated article depicts the fight for life in the Big Scrub. Among other special articles in the same issue of "Life," are Dr Fitchett's continued story of the first and only Australian revolution; a thrilling chapter from the story of the famous Guids. and a red hot article by "X.YZ.," on what is termed "The Thrice-Exposed Imposture of Theosophy." The editor's policy of making "Life" strong in fiction is maintained by the publishing of a new detectvie story by Jacques Futrelle, illustrated by Lauire Tayler; another amusing adventure of the Dixon family, is relate, and there is an exceedingly clever and humourous stoiy, entitled "Happy Hawkins and the Chinese Devil.'" The other newfeature introduced since the enlargement of "Life." and called The Clearing House, has developed into a most interesting department. All sorts of questions of the moment are discussed, and many curious photographs supplied bv readers are printed.
In its regular with poiitics, the science, sport, literature, and business of the hour, "Life" is better than ever. Any man who wishes to keep abreast of the history of the times cannot do better than read Dr Fitchvett's monthly contribution on passing events. In his history of affairs on the other side of the world the editor writes cf the great awakening of the east; the meeting of King Edward and the Czar; the doings of the Kaiser; the doings of the British Parliament: and, of course, the coming visit of the American Fleet to Australia.
