THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1908. BACK BLOCK MAILS.

AMONG the various matters that were placed before the Premier on his recent visit to the King' Country was the request for two mails a week to the out districts of Te Kuiti, and it is to be hoped the request then made will be followed by united and vigorous

action on tlie pari" oi the settlers affected. One of the most necessary and important features of civilised life is the making of proper provision tor the communication by nuul between a!i parts the of country'. The arguments in favouroi treqiKnt mail services are too apparent to require re itcra t i on. Commerc iall y, socially and for the proper workin/; of the business of the couniry in all respects it is necessary to link together country and town and town and city in the most complete manner possible. lhai this is being done in New Zealand wc have ample evidence, and it rests mainly with the settlers to see that their district is kept abreast of progress in the important matter oi the mails. Undoubtedly, to a certain extent, the instituting oi an extra ma.il is governed by the condition ol the roads, and in view of the iact that a metalling policy is to be adopted on the main thoroughfare of the district the claim for the increased mail service, is rendered all the more reasonable. However, apart from all other considerations, the strongest argument in favour of the request, is that the progress of the district warrants the increase. Moreover, there is every reason to expect that in a very short time a still more frequent service will lie necessary, and in responding favourably to a reasonable demand the Government will be merely fulfilling an obvious duly to a district which has not been overburdened with Departmental attention.
