DISTRICT PARS.

The meeting of the Maniapoto Tmvharetoa Maroi Land Board which "\ was fixed for last week at Te Kuiti, and which was postponed owing to a bereavement in the family of the President, Mr. J. W. Browne, has been fixed for Tuesday, July 7th. The Taihapc Borough Council is applying for the loan of £4,270 from the Government for the purpose of erecting a town hall, municipal chambers and a public library. An organ recital was given in' St. John's Church, Tc Awamutu, on Friday evening last, and a collection was taken up in aid of the Home Mission fund. Items were given by Mrs. Parkers, Miss Mullions, Mr. Bathurst, the choir, Miss Hicks, Mrs. Andrew, Mrs. Clarke and Herr Moeller. Mrs. J as. North accompanied on the organ. Mr E. C. Falwassev's many friends will regret to learn thajt he is at present confined to the house, suffering from a severe attack of asthma. A move is being made to start a branch of the Oddfellows' Lodge at Kawhia. The question of the erection of a Cottage Hospital for Kawhia is being freely discussed in that place at the present time. In the last orders issued by the Council of Defence, appears the appointment of Major Allen Bell as Commander of the Second Regiment, Auckland Mounted Rifles. Wc understand there is a probability of no less than four M.P's being in this district on the occasion of the commercial conference at Raetihi on July 7th next. Besides Messrs Remington and Hogan it is not unlikely that Messrs Jennings (Taumarunui) and Major (Hawera) will accompany the party. —Waimarino Call. A young Maori, who has become quite a capable hand on one of our costal steamers, secured his position by sending to the captain the following quaint epistle :—" Mr told me you wanted a boy to go with you on your steamer. lam a good boy, I tell you, and I have passed Standard four. Mr. master says lam a rascal, hut by-and-bye you see I will be a good man for you." He! kept his word. On Saturday, next the Hamilton Rugby Union meet the lower Waikato Union at Hamilton, and a good game may confidently be looked forward to. The entries for the Waikato Winter Show number, roughly, well over 1600, aid will comprise fine exhibitions of agricultural, industrial, fruit, horticultural, wool, flax and other classes. It is said that the exhibit to be provided by the Agricultural Department will b; a remarkably fine one. It is intended that the whole of the 2nd Regiment, Auckland Mounted Rides, shall proceed to Auckland to assist in the welcome to the American fleet, and will leave Hamilton on August 6th, returning on August nth. The following clause, culled from the Governor's speech, will be particularly gratifying to the residents of the townships named —"The present law with respect to Maori townships, such as Taumarunui and Te Kuiti and other centres, has been found to be unsatisfactory to Europeans, and the disabilities arising from this law will be removed." The death occurred at Ongarue on Saturday last of Mr. W. Bond, the well - known storekeeper, dropping dead in the billiard-room. Mr. Bond was well-known in the district, and had been engaged in business at Ongarue for some years. The funeral took place at Te Kuiti on Monday last, service being conducted by Mr. i Wise, Home Missionary. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Blackman and Cobb. The weather for the past week has hem unusually wet, and/the rivers of the district have approached perilously near flood mark. On Monday morning the early train from Te Kuiti was detained atHangatiki for nearly an hour, owing to a ; slip on the line. The slip has been a soueee of irouble for a considerable time, and tiie Department are making a-light deviation in order to get'the line ele.ir of the rotten ground close li> the hill. A large gang of workmen j are uigaged on the deviation, which should be completed very shortly. The engine for the portable stone crusher, which is to be placed on the Awakino road, arrived at Te Kuiti this week, and is now temporarily housed on a vacant piece of ground in Rora Street. The remainder of the plant is expected to arrive shortly, hut nothing can be done towards i placing llu: crusher on to the Awa« I kino road until after the winter. A hockey match (Green & Cole* brook v. Te Kuiti) will be played on the i )omain next Thursday afternoon. A sitting of the Native Appellate Court opened at Otorohanga on Tuesday. Word has been received at Taumarunui to the effect that the Auckland Hoard of Education have refused to giant a separate school for Europeans in ihat town. The residents, we understand, are petitioning: Parliament. The building trade is still brisk at Te Kuiti, and the town is assuming greater proportions each month. The public buildings and Courthouse are ahou! completed by the contractor, Vir indoe, and the Stock Inspector's i'sa.ienv. under the hands of Mr ;\iai kwiek, should shortly be finished. \ two-stoKv building for Mr Fortes- < ue. p. being erected in Rora-street, and numerous dwellings, in various stages of construction, are to be seen on tin outskirts of the town. The Rev. E. M. Cowic, late of Te .Aioha, lias now taken up his position as vicar ofSt. Peter's Anglican Church, Hamilton.
