The completion of the Kawa-Ngu-tunui road was the subject of a deputation to the Premier at Oparau on his recent journey to Kawhia. It was pointed out that only two and a-half miles of construction was required, in addition to a bridge over the Waipj river, and this would mean a saving of about twelve miles between Oparau and the railway. The Kawhia people are taking steps to urge upon the Government the necessity of surveying a route for a branch rnJKvav tho harbour and tne Main Trunk railway, and Te Kuiti residents are to be asked to cooperate. A fire broke out in a tent alongside the Mangaokcwa stream, belonging io Messrs Percy, Trevathen and I>u<li. about 2.30 p.m. on Sunday last, but was fortunately subdued before any serious damage was done. Seymour, of Te Kuiti; a farm at Kio Kio, belonging to Mr T. Wells, was bought by Mr Simpson, of Rangitiki. The Government is making every effort to complete the laying- of the rails on the Main Trunk line by [the beginning of August. Several waggon teams, which Messrs Ryan _ and Bird have been working at Te Kuiti. were shipped to Makatote at the beginning of the week for the purpose of carting the rails along the route oi' the line.

As showing' how useles it is to endeavour to collect rates from the Maoris, the following is a statement of the amount of rates due and collected bv the Treasurer of the Raglan County Council. Year too; - Total rates collectable, £1360 18s 3d; collected, £3 6s sd. Year 1908 -Total rates collectable, £1583 18s id: collected, £4 lOs Id. Total due for two years £2944 16s 4c!, amount paid £7 lOs 6d ; leaving a balance outstanding of £2036 lOs lod and consequently the amount of Government subsidy lost to the Council was £3OO. The increased contribution to the Waikafo Hospital was £3OO, thus the actual loss to the County from the non-pay-ment of Maori rates is £3336 19s lod. The bachelors of Otorohanga intend holding a grand ball on Thursday, July i6th, and are busy with the preliminaries. A strong committee has been formed, and by the number of invitations issued, visitors are expected from all the surrounding districts.

On Saturday last at Te Kuiti, Mrs White, who acted as Secretary for the recent Sale of Work in connection with the Congregational Church, was the recipient of a presentation from the ladies' committee. The souvenir was a handsome silver cake basket, and the presentation was made by Mrs J. Boddie on behalf of the committee.
