WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

engineer's report.

The following report was read at the meeting of the above Council held in Te Kuiti last week :

" I have made the estimate required by the Aria settlers for the purpose of raising a loan. The work they wish to do is to widen the Totoro. Potaka, and parts of the Kumara and Kiekie roads to 14 feet, and metal them 9 feet wide and 9 inches thick, so as to enable them to cart milk to the factory, as well as to get in their stores more economically. At present suitable metal is only known to exist in two or three places, and it will have to be carted a long distance, consequently, the metalling will be very costly. I have made enquiries about papa and clay, but find it would be more expensive to use than metal. I have not included in my estimate the road from the Mokau-iti bridge through the Aria township, as it is a main road, and it is thought the Government will complete this portion. The total distance proposed to be widened and metalled is 15 ! z miles, and my estimate is £[ 1,080, but, as some money is sure to be put on the estimates for these roads, I think £IO,OOO would be sufficient.-Pungare-HV Road : The contractors have been making good progress. One contract should have been finished last week, and (the other will probably be completed about the end of this week. These two contracts will absorb the the £IOO for this road. Arapae Road : Contract No. 1. —This contract, with the exception of a few rocky places, is now complete for a little over two miles. The rock would have been taken out, but there has been some difficulty in getting explosives. However, the contractor is now at work on the rock, and that portion of the road should be open for traffic in a few days.—Contract No. 2 : Fair progress has been made on this contract, but a delay has also been caused for the want of explosives. The two day men have been engaged in fixing up the worst places, and doing other work which could not very we!! be let by contract."

played on the Domain ground, where a very hand fought game resulted. the game had started _Te Sq@%mit\i was pushing the visit- ' ing team very hard on their line, when Melville, in the local pack, got his ribs broken. He changed places with Dormel, but had only been there a few minutes when he had to leave the field. The Kihikihi captain would not allow a substitute on to play, and the Te Awamutu team had to play out the remainder of the game with thirteen men and a cripple, as Melville would not give up play and leave his team short. The game resulted in a win for Kihikihi by 6 points to 3 points. The juniors met the same day, the Kihikihi junior team, and were beaten by 3 points to nil, the try being scored just at the call of time. There are some great improvements going on at the sale yards at present, enlarging pens, etc., to get ready for a large number of springers to be offered on Saturday at the sale. Mr Bathurst's new boarding house is just about completed, Messrs Wheeler and Irvine, the contractors, having pushed the work on most creditably, which proves they wish to make their work and business succesful in the district.
