Treatment of Calf Scour.
One of the most common difficulties met with in raising calves on skim-milk is the persistent form of diarrhoea known as calf-scour. This disease is due to the action of various fermcntive and putrefactive bacteria in milk. The undue growth of bacteria may be largely prevented by the exercise of strict precautions from the time ithe milk is drawn from the cow until it is;fed to the calf. Proceeding on the basis of the results of the investigations by Von Behring, the Mayland Experiment Station, and the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department of Agriculture, Washington, on the influence of formalin on desease germs and on digestion when administered in small amounts in in']:-.. Dr. In Lin. l-i ili>- C:'.rcIhu, ob.Lk'ii. Lv::Ua! twelve milk-teL calves aii'ectcJ viili scour by adiuiy formalin to the milk in the proportion of one part to 4000 parts of milk. This dilution may be readily obtained by pouringo.s ounce of formalin in 15.5 ounces of water. From this solution one tea spoonful is added to each pint or pound of milk to be fed to the affected cow. From the experiments it appeared that the results are practically the same whether the formalin solution is placed in the milk just before feeding to the calf or immediately after the skim-milk is received from the separator. Apparently, however, it was advisable to add the formalin to the milk immediately after separation. Of the twelve cows treated in this war, four recovered without any further treatment, seven recovered on the second da v. and one on the fourth dav.
