HINTS FOR HOUSEWIVES.
Lamp wicks must be changed often to ensure good light, as they will soon become clogged, and the oil does not pass through them freely. A clear flame will be certain if the wicks are soaked in vinegar twenty-four hours before using. For Washing Paint. —Never use soda, which injures the colour. A cloth wrung out of soft water, and dipped in prepared chalk, will remove all stains. Well rinse, and dry afterwards. Enamel should have a iinal rub with a clean chamois leather to restore the polish. To make volatile soap for removing paints, grease spots, etc., take four tablespoonsful of spirits of hartshorn, four tablespoonsful of alcohol, and a tablespoonsful of salt. Shake the whole well together in a bottle, and apply with a sponge or brush. To keep the bright green colour of summer cabbage and some other vegetables, boil fast in plenty of water, in which has been dissolved a piece of washing soda the size of two peas ; cover until the water boils, and take off the lid. If the steam is shut in. the cabbage will be yellow and unsightly.
