MATIERE.
The Hon. W. T. Jennings, M.P., has paid a visit to Matiere looking up old and new friends, and making inquiries as to the many little wants of the district, of which there are always a good number. On Wednesday last Mangaroa was en fete, the occasion being the wedr ding of Mr P. Goldfinch and Miss, O'Malley. This being the first wed. ding solemnised at Mangaroa, special interest was taken. The ceremony took place in the hall. In the evening a number of friends were entertained by Mr and Mrs O'Malley, the parents of the bride. On Thursday evening a social was held in the Mangapapa schoolroom, with the object of raising funds to erect a shelter shed for the children, which is a great necessity; in fact, the Education Department should erect these when they build a school, as one is equally as necessary as the other, more especially in the backblocks. A very painful accident happened this week to Mr John Boult, who was engaged in blasting logs. By sonae means about ten pounds of powdjlk got ignited right alongside of him; with the result that he is severely burnt about the arms, neck and face, Whooping cough js very prevalent just at present, the majority "of the children being laid up, On Saturday next the Matiere fo6tballers journey to Mangaroa to play a game with that team. I believe there are to be four teams in the Ohura this season—viz., Matiere, Niho Nino, Mangaroa and Tokerima. Four years
ago it was difficult to get one team throughout the district, which chiefly comprised surveyors. Mr and Mrs Mossman were visitors schoolmaster, has übtamed an fortnight's holiday. it is reported that he intends to bring a partner for his joys and sorrows back with him. A suitable reception is being arranged for the happv couple. Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., has been on a visit to the Ohura district. He had a meeting at Mangapapa, and a strong deputation waited upon him at Matiere on Monday, and before him the various needs of the Matiere district. Mr Jennings promised to do his best to further the prosperity of the district. Owing to the wet night there was a small attendance at the meeting of householders on Monday night. Only six nominations w r ere received for the school committee: Messrs Hunt, Wisken, Lyon, Taylor, Hyde and So-wry. Mr Hyde asked leave to withdraw and the remaining five were then declared elected. A meeting of the new committee was then held, when Mr Hunt was re-elected Chairman, and Mr Wisken, Secretary. It was decided jto call tenders for the erection of a shelter shed and a school fence. At the meeting to elect a delegate on the Medical Association Mr Lyon was elected to represent Matiere, and Mr W. A. Carter for Mangapapa.
