KAWHIA.

Since the grass has grown freely, and there are good prospects ,--now for feed for the winter, but there are very many black patches showing where the grass was killed by the fires. Hundreds of sacks of grass seed have come into the district during the last two or three weeks, and there is a large quantity to come yet. as none of the Government seed has arrived. Owing to the fire on the s.s. VVaitangi. the trade has been completely disorganised, and there are a number of passengers waiting both here and at Waitara. The s.s. Claymore made her first trip here last week, bringing a large cargo, but there was so much grass seed, etc., lying at Onehunga,_ that the s.s. Muritai was put on to bring it down. This week we will have no steamer till the s.s. Claymore conies on Friday, the injury to the s.s. V\ aitangi having evidently been more serious than was at first thought. Owing to the low price of flax. Mr Williams' mill at Aotea, and Messrs Bell Bros, and Ross' mill at Hari Hari have been shut down, and it is rumoured that the mills at Marakopa and Xukuhakari will also close down. Labour is very short both tor seed sowing and for iroad work, and farmers are afraid they will not be able to get their seed sown before the weather breaks.
