JOSH BILLING'S PHILOSOPHY.
The safest thing that I kan do iz to hold mi tung; I hav.lernt this bi hearing other folks talk. There must be sum virtew in snaix, for the Lord never made ennything just to pass away the time. The consumashun ov all villany iz, that it begins its career bi cheating sum folks, and ends up bi gitting beat bi everybody. I hav cum to the conklushun that the civilizashun in this world haz kost about ninety cents on the dollar. If a man expekts to make mutch ov a commoshun on this earth, he haz got to hav a decent-sized noze on him. I kompare most ov the agitators to incendiarys, who kno just enuff to set a house on fire, but don't kno ennff to put it out and save the inmates. We are too apt to look upon the misfortunes ov our nabors az judgments from Heaven, just az tho a sinner couldn't be correkted enny other way than bi burning up hiz barn with a stroke ov litening. One ov the kindest things that God haz dun for man iz to make us dependent upon each other. Flattery is the basest ov pashuns ; it; real objekt iz to benefit itself at the expense ov another. No man ever let go hiz holt yet without expekting to git a better one. Supply and demand work the same way in moral az fizikal matters ; it iz the grate supply ov flats amung mankind that keeps up the demand for sharps. Fustcums virtew, then cums knolledge, then cums energy—theze are the three king pins ov human excellence. Ignoranse iz a terrible misfortune. What kan be wuss than a man with a deaf and dum soul in him ? To be thoroly edukated a man must kno himself, and no man haz lived long enuff for that yet. To work iz the grate law ov natur. Sum saw wood to git a dinner, while others hav to saw wood to digest the j dinner they hav got. A lawyer iz an individual who 1 stands reddy to abuze the lawyer and J client on the other side for a certain j amount ov munny. J
