VOLUNTEER NEWS.

Proposed Troop for Te Kuiti

A meeting was held at Te Kuiti on Thursday evening last, for the purpose of discussing the proposal to form a Mounted Rifle Volunteer troop. Mr W. M. Bankart presided, and there was a good muster. Ser-geant-Major Coleman, Government Drill Instructor, was present and outlined the advantages to be derived by forming a troop immediately. Capitation would be earned by the end of February next, and the movement would be at least a year further forward, with regard to drill and other matters, if the troop was completed before the end of November. A number of questions were put by those desirous of joining, and after the necessary enlightenment had been obtained, it was decided to proceed with the project.

Mr Bankart called for the names of those desirous of joining, and eight members were enrolled in the room. Others have since been obtained, and the number has been increased to twelve. It is intended to form a troop consisting of sixteen members, to be attached to the Waikato No. 2 Squadron. Parades can be put in at Te Kuiti, and the only time it will be necessary to leave, will be during encampment, at which all members have to attend. Rifle shooting will also be provided for, and ample amunition for practice is supplied by the Government.

There are several competitions coming off in connection with ihe Waikato No. 2 Squadron, very shortly, and members of the Te Kuiti troop will be eligible to take part. The first is the Mounted Scouts' Competition, which takes place at Te Awamutu on December 4th. The trophy competed for is a handsome silver challenge cup, presented by Miss Miller, and the conditions provide for all-round work.
