CORRESPONDENCE.

WILLOWS IN RIVES S.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—L.saw a.- in the Chronicle recently to the effect that the Government had placed' a sum of money—£2oo, I think—on the Estimates for the purpose of clearing the Mangapu river of„ willows This is decidedly a step in' the: direction., of coping 'with a very real and rapidly, increasing evil, jjndl it ..is.. to,.he- hoped the money willft)e spent on the work as soon as authority to do so can be be obtained. Of course the amount will go only a little way towards clearing the river, but once a start is made there will be every inducement to proceed with the work. The recent rains, which were not abnormal for this season of the year, almost created a flood, and it is generally admitted that the danger of widespread inundation is increasing every year. Even now at Hangatiki and further down the river there is a lot of water backed up and very little more rain would create a distructive flood. Presumably, one of the Government departments will have the spending of the money, but I would suggest that the County Council, as the representative local body, should give the matter attention. Hoping to see our Councillors discuss the situation at their next meeting.—l am, etc., KING COUNTRYITE.
