FOOTBALL.

~# ;; A match will be played at Te Kuiti foil Saturday next, August 24th, between the Te Kuiti and Mangapeehi steams. The visitors will arrive by in the morning and catch the express home in the evening. Play will therefore start at I p.m. and ' all. the members of the Te Kuiti team are requested to be on the ground a quarter of an hour before the kick-off. The Mangapeehi team has not had many opportunities for practice with outside fifteens, but they can be relied upon to put up a good fight, and a keen struggle may be looked for. The following will represent the visitors : Full-back, F. Nankervis ; threequarters, R. Mills, W. White, D. Spiers; five-eights, A. McCracken, R. McKenzie; half, H. Donkin ; forwards, I. Dobson (wing), C. Bowden, J. Moran, F. Bramlen, Mackie, Koroheke, Rist, Ellis. The following have been chosen to represent Te Kuiti: —Full-back, Connell; three-quarters, Taylor, J. Hetet, F. Kerr ; five-eights, Rou Rata ; half, Vause ; forwards, H. Cleaver, Ngaronga, Pavitt, H. Turner, Tohi Searancke, Keeley, Warihi, Hikaka. Emergencies : Backs —D. Hetet, I. Kerr; forwards —D. Turner, F. Gemming^ -''The match between representatives of the Hetet and Turner families (Taniwharau), and the chosen of the Maniapoto Rugby Union, which is to be played at Te Kuiti on Saturday, August 31st, is creating considerable interest, and given a fine day there is every reason to look forward to a most enjoyable game. It is doubtful team in the Union can be got together, some of the players not being able to spare the time in view of the Rotorua fixture on the following Saturday. However, a fairly strong combination can be relied upon, and a very exciting contest should result. Not many families are able to boast the same number of athletes as the Taniwharau, the final fifteen having been chosen from twenty-three players, all of whom are at least up to the average standard of football, while some are among the best pertormers in the district. Next Saturday, August 24th, the Taniwharaus are engaged to play the Otorohanga team. A reply has been received by Mr A. E. Power, Secretary of the Maniapoto Rugby Union, from the Rotorua Rugby Union, intimating that the Hot Lakes' team will be prepared to meet the Maniapoto representatives at Rotorua on September 7th. An endeavour was also made to get a game arranged between Maniapoto and Cambridge on the Wednesday preceeding the Rotorua fixture, but as the Waikato Hunt Club races take place at Cambridge on the day in question, the Cambridge team has suggested the following Wednesday, September nth. A meeting of the Maniapoto Union will probably be held before the departure of the team for Rotorua, to discuss the matter, but it is extremely doubtful if the players can spare the time necessary to undertake both matches. A football social is to be held at Taumarunui on Friday evening, and promises to be a huge success. The proposed social of the Maniapoto Rugby Union is to be held in September. Probably a date to fit with the return of the team from Rotorua would be acceptable. As the early departure of the Mangapeehi team will prevent the local players from entertaining the visitors during the evening, luncheon will be provided for the visiting team at F. H. Sims, Railway Temperance Hotel, at II a.m., after the arrival of the train. All players are requested to be on the ground at I o'clock sharp. Auckland's representative touring team left for the south at rhe beginning of the week, and played the first match at Taranaki on Wednesday. The games of the tour do not count for the Ranfurly Shield, such matches having to be played en the ground of the holders. The Auckland team includes quite a number of young players, whose performances will be watched with interset.
