An experimental shipment of New Zealand apples, consisting of nearly 400 cases, arrived in London by the Athenic early in June, and on discharge about 50 per cent, of them were found to have gone bad. The rest had to be disposed of at nominal prices. The consignors seem to have invited failure by sending the fruit as ordinary cargo, instead of having it stored in a cool chamber lowered to an even temperture of 44deg. Considering that the New Zealand Government guaranteed the shipment to the extent of id per lb., it is extraordinary (remarks a London correspondent) that the fruit was allowed to be shipped with such an obvious disregard for reasonable precautions against deterioration en route. Some light is thrown upon the forces which control ths wheat market by a statement which recently appeared in the Otago Daily Times. The bulk of the wheat now offering is held by speculators, and millers naturally object to giving a profit to men whose intrusion into their market they resent. At the same time, some millers are out of wheat, while others cannot continue working upon present stocks for more than a few weeks longer. They are thus faced with two alternatives —cither to come into the market or close down. Either course would appear to entail a loss in working, for in default of gristing their ordinary output of flour the conditions under which they subscribe to the association demand their making provision for its delivery from another mill. And no miller will accept an increased output except at a substantial premium.
